The Colosseum

The Classical City was a research studio in which we studied Roman architecture. An arch, bath, basilica and amphitheatre were studied by drawing the buildings ourselves. I did the Colosseum, and next to that a map of the Roman empire which shows spread of Roman Architecture.

The Colosseum is an image of the class division in Roman society. The higher your social class, the closer you were seated to the arena. The best place was for the emperor. The worst place for the women, in the top of the building; protected from the bloody spectacle.
