Atelierwerken

A new site specific city starts with the current identity, which is on Chongming Island defined by vast ribbon development. Villages are stretched along the roads, creating a pocket landscape. Each house is part of the network but also closely related to the landscape. To scale this system to a city we have to start with defining the boundaries and protect the open spaces by firm policy. Within these boundaries a city can and will develop, outside lays a ban on building to maintain the open spaces.

Het Rotterdamse “Crooswijk” wordt gekenmerkt door een eenzijdig woningaanbod van kleine portieketagewoningen. Daarnaast zijn de bouwblokken en de verkavelingsstructuur in deze wijk aangetast tijdens de stadsvernieuwing.
Om dit te doorbreken is een heldere stedebouwkundige structuur nodig, waarbij bestaande bouwmassa’s grotendeels behouden kunnen worden. De oplossing is gevonden in het woonhoven-concept.

Rijnhoutplein Squared

Het Rijnhoutplein, een plek waar het Oude Westen en de Nieuwe Binnenweg samen komen, ware het niet voor een blauwgestreept  appartementencomplex uit het stadsvernieuwingstijdperk, dat deze connectie blokkeert. Dit gebouw onttrekt het Rijnhoutpein aan het zicht, met als gevolg dat het plein een vergeten en verwaarloosde indruk achterlaat. 

Sant’andrea al Quirinale te Rome staat centraal als inspiratie en is aanleiding voor het ontwerp van een villa geënt op de barok. Bij het bezoek aan de kapel is duidelijk geworden dat Bernini de kapel met veel vakkunde heeft ontworpen. De massa vormt het karakter van de ruimten. De hoofdruimte heeft een vooral openbaar karakter waar een gezamenlijke dienst kan worden gegeven. Deze eigenschap heeft de hoofdruimte te danken aan zijn afmetingen.

The project site is a square located on Nieuwe Binnenweg, which is a social and cultural meeting spot in Rotterdam. It is full of life and dynamism in contrary with the monotone neighborhood which is hidden from sight with the facades on Nieuwe Binnenweg. These buildings become like mock up facades that are misrepresenting the realty. In order to bring back honesty and to improve the quality, transition in architecture and functions is used as concept. Existing volumes are detached in to units and then dismantled to its smallest components.

Piano nobile, also known as Bel-Etage, is the principal floor of a large house, usually built in one of the styles of classical renaissance, braque or classicistic architecture. This floor contains the principal reception and bedrooms of the house. Piano nobile is often the first story, located above an ground floor containing minor rooms and service rooms. The reasons for this were so the rooms would have finer views, and more practically to avoid the dampness and odors of the street level.
